A showcase of selected works of theater, dance and music, presented to an audience of domestic and overseas performing arts professionals! A total of 15 selections, chosen from entries made through open contests and invitations, will be featured in part, or in their entirety, in Small Hall ‘Dal' (of the National Theater of Korea), Studio ‘Byeol’ (of the National Theater of Korea) and similar venues during PAMS 2009.
Benefits available for PAMS Choice runner-ups include airfare support for overseas performing tours (co-sponsored by KOFICE), training and consulting opportunities, and translation services (co-sponsored by the Korea Literature Translation Institute) to assist in performers’ efforts to broaden their horizons in overseas markets.

Producer Kang Ryang-Won vividly re-creates the characters from Emile Zola’s novel of the same title by highlighting the exaggerated body language in the minimal mise-en-scène. Therese Raquin, premiered on stage through the Collaborative Challenge initiative of the ARKO Arts Theater, is featured as a domestic selection in the Seoul Performing Arts Festival 2009. When His Watch Stopped , Sadari Theater Company |

The Day the Clock Stood Still deals with the theme of war and the tragedies within it, which is rare for a play targeting a younger audience. This rather serious subject matter is rendered through the eyes of children. Premiered in 2004, the play received the ‘Art of the Year’ award from ARKO in 2006, and has been on tour in Japan since its debut in the Kagoshima Children’s Festival in 2008. Déjà vu, Dance Theatre ON |

Choreographed by Hong Seung-Yeop, Déjà vu deals with the identities of time and existence. Produced through a collaborative effort in the Biennale de la Danse 2000 in Lyon, France, the dance performance has been well-received by critics and audiences alike. Since its re-staging in 2006, Déjà vu has been performed at multiple venues, including Mercat De Les Flors-Sala in Barcelona, Spain. The 11th Shadow, Ahn Aesoon Dance Company |

This contemporary dance rendition of a traditional Korean shadow play, Manseokjung Nori, comments on the clash between traditional and modern values. Since it was selected as a finalist for the Bagnolet Choreography Award in 1998, the performance has been drawing keen interest through tours and festivals, which have included a local production in Germany at the invitation of Tanzprojekt Bielefeld (1999), as well as performances at the Singapore Arts Festival, Festival Internacional Cervantino (2004), and others. Rose pays homage to a woman and mother Earth. The musical composition of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring is re-interpreted through tarot cards. Rose is the most recent production by the Sungsoo AhnPick-up Group, and is a feature invitational performance at SPAF 2009, following Choice winning the ‘Art of the Year’ award from ARKO, and Bolero being nominated for Bolero Benois de la Danse Award for the Best Choreography. Full Moon is a journey through time and space, in which one pursues insanity and madness behind the ever-changing colors of the moon. Different faces and corresponding imagery of the moon are expressed through a seductive yet harmonious combination of dance, music and visuals. Also a SPAF 2009 selection, Full Moon, which was choreographed by Park Hobin, received the ‘2008 Dance Critics Award’ in its debut year. This dance performance presents an original rendition of Mil-Yang Baekjung-Nori and its modern interpretation on a single stage. The master combines a demonstration of prototypical dance movements, through Nobleman's Dance, Layman’s Dance and Drum Dance as he translates the aesthetic qualities of a Korean tradition through a uniquely modern composition. Premiered in 2007, Beckett’s Room expresses the absurdity of life through diverse physical movements. Kim Yun-Jung’s choreography is refreshingly rendered through a harmonious combination of free-flowing dance moves, scripts and music. Kim received the ‘Art of the Year’ award for Drop the Anchor in 2006, and has worked on projects co-sponsored by KCAF of Korea and Tanzhaus of Germany, with the support of the German government. The Buddhist music project, Li And Sa, ‘Be-Being’ |

The Buddhist music project “Yi and Sa” re-interprets Buddhist music and transforms it into a mixed form of performing arts by giving a stage presence to many of the visuals found in Buddhism. With the composer Jang Young-Gyu at the center, who is active in the diverse fields of music, dance, theater and film as well as a composer of Korean classical music, Bi-Bing consists of artists working together in works such as Uhuhboo Poject, Ahn En-me’s Dance New Chunhyang, Bari, and others. Emphasizing the technical prowess of the players of various musical instruments, ‘Baram-Gŏt’ attempts to recreate traditional melodies through progressive sounds. One of its musical performances ‘In Search For Water,’ which elaborates on the improvisational properties of the sinawi tradition, has been creating quite a sensation, for which art director Won IL won his fourth prize in the field of film music of Daejong Film Awards for Movie Hwang Jin-yi. The city of wind flow, ‘Bulsechul’ |

Traditional Korean music group ‘Bul-Se-Chul’ interprets traditional Korean aesthetics and motifs with contemporary emotions. Using mostly Korean musical instruments, with the addition of an acoustic guitar, Bul-Se-Chul remains faithful to the roots of Korean traditional music. City of Winds And Currents, which is one of the group’s most iconic compositions, received the ‘21st Century Arirang Award’ from the First Annual 21st Century Korean Music Project. Reading the Shoes, Kim Yoon-jin Dance Company |

Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s The Red Shoes, this performance depicts the existence of the repressed human body through a magical representation of visual media. Reaching beyond the category of dance, it draws various elements from music, theater, and visual arts to engage in a discourse on the realities of life faced by the physical body. The Dance Troupe previously produced Kisaeng becomes you, a joint performance between Korea’s SID and New York Dean Moss’s DTW during 2008-2009, which has been received favorably in Korea, Hong Kong and New York. Combining dance with puppetry,Seven Ways demonstrates seven ways of obsession with orgasm represented through seven different types of puppets and seven different movements. Jung Geum-Hyung was invited to Chapter Arts Centre’s Experimentica 07 (England) for a previous performance titled Vacuum Cleaner, which was invited once again to Experimentica 09, to be held in November this year.
